In the meantime, here are some handy tips to help you and your family stay a bit cooler while you wait for the technician to arrive!

How to Stay Cool When Your AC Is Broken:

  • Set your ceiling fans to spin counterclockwise
  • Keep your window treatments and blinds closed
  • Try not to open exterior doors
  • Open your windows at night
  • Avoid using heat-producing appliances
  • Make your own DIY “AC”

Set Your Ceiling Fans to Spin Counterclockwise

Generally, ceiling fans are set to rotate clockwise, which helps send cool air down where you can feel it. But here’s a tip: if your air conditioner breaks, try setting your ceiling fan to rotate counterclockwise instead.

Why is that? Well, when the blades spin counterclockwise, they pull up the air in your room and spread it around, making it feel cooler. If you’re not sure where the switch is to change the blade direction, check the base of your ceiling fan. Usually, there’s a switch right there. Just flip it, and you should be able to change the blade’s direction easily.

Keep Your Window Treatments and Blinds Closed

While a bit of sunlight peeking into your home can be refreshing, it’s not so great if your air conditioner isn’t working. In that case, make sure you close your blinds or draw your curtains for every window in your home.

While we’re on the topic, it’s a good idea to close any open windows, too. We get it; creating a cross-breeze might seem like a smart move, but during the day, it doesn’t do much to keep the warm air out of your house.

Try Not to Open Exterior Doors

Similarly, try to keep from opening your home’s exterior doors as much as you can. This means any door that leads outside, like the front door, back door, basement doors, or garage door. It might seem tricky, but avoiding these doors can really cut down on warm air sneaking into your home.

Open Your Windows at Night

At night, you can open your windows since the outdoor temps naturally drop. The cooler evening air can help keep your home more comfortable. Just remember to close them again in the morning.

Avoid Using Heat-producing Appliances

Next, try to avoid using big household appliances that generate heat, as they’ll just make your home even warmer. Think about things like:

  • Oven
  • Stove
  • Dryer
  • Dishwasher

Make Your Own DIY “AC”

We know this last tip might sound a bit, well, “creative,” but it could really come in handy when you’re feeling super-hot. You know the saying, “Desperate times call for desperate measures!”

So, did you know you can make your own personal AC with just two things? All you need is some ice and an electric fan. It might sound a bit funny, but it actually works. Just fill a large bowl or container with ice and place it right in front of a fan. Then, turn the fan on, and voilà, you’ve got yourself a DIY air conditioner!

This DIY AC works because the fan blows warm air onto the ice, cooling it down and giving you a refreshing breeze for instant relief. Just sit back, relax, and let us handle the hard parts!
