A new year has started, and we are smack dab in the middle of January. Your service professionals at Five Star Heating & Cooling Dayton know how important it is to make sure your furnace is running efficiently and your family stays nice and warm for the rest of the winter. With temperature drops, as a resident of Ohio, you may be looking for tips and tricks on how to lower your heating bill while still keeping your home nice and cozy. The problem is, there is so much furnace information out there that it’s complicated to know the difference between what is furnace myth or what is true. But dont worry. We got you covered!
Myth One: Crank the Thermostat to Get Heat Faster
If we are all being honest, most of us have at one time, or another cranked our thermostats up in the hopes of the house getting heated faster. Unfortunately, there is no truth in this myth. Even with the temperature raised significantly higher, a furnace still has to work to reach that desired temperature. Furnaces are designed to heat the whole space they are created for. So, even with a raised setting, the warm air still needs to circulate throughout the entire house and new designated degree. Doing this puts strain on the furnace. Instead, do a quick run-through of your home and make sure all your vents and registers are open. Also, check to ensure nothing is blocking that air from passing through, such as bags, hampers, etc., can block air from passing through.
Myth Two: Close the Vents & Registers to Save Energy
It is a popular belief that closing the vents and registers of unused rooms will help conserve energy, thus saving the homeowner money. This is a complete myth! Your home’s furnace is designed to distribute air equally throughout your entire house. Closing off vents will allow air to build up pressure and will put stress on your residential furnace.
Myth Three: Cold Feet Is Normal
Do you happen to get cold feet often in your home? Perhaps you brushed this issue off as “normal” and instead got into the habit of throwing socks or slippers on to compensate for the problem. However, if you are consistently experiencing cold feet inside the house, this may mean the home is not adequately insulated. So what should you check for in the house? The best place to start is the attic, crawl spaces, or any other areas where they may be insulation in your house. Experts suggest that a home should have 10-14 layers of insulation. If your insulation is less than this, you may want to consider adding more.
Another thing to check is for drafts. Most drafts pass through the gap on the underside of doors or windows. You can fix this issue by installing proper weatherstripping around your doors. Door draft guards are helpful as well and require no installation.
